Rack Rate
The rack rate is a hotel’s official published price for a room type before any discount, promotion or negotiated agreement is applied. It is the ceiling from which almost every rate a guest actually pays is discounted.
The name comes from the physical rack of room cards once kept behind the front desk, where the standard price for each room was displayed. The term outlived the object.
In practice very few guests pay rack. Corporate agreements, group blocks, package rates, member rates and last-minute pricing all sit below it. Its real function today is as a reference point: it anchors the discount structure and, in many jurisdictions, satisfies a legal requirement to publish a maximum price.
Rack rate matters less than it once did precisely because dynamic pricing has largely replaced fixed price lists. Under yield management the selling rate moves continuously with demand, and rack becomes a rarely touched upper bound rather than a working price.
