Independent Hotel

An independent hotel is a property that operates without a hotel brand: it is not part of a chain and does not carry a brand name under a franchise or management agreement. It sets its own standards, identity and distribution strategy.

Independence is about the brand, not ownership. Many branded hotels are owned by independent investors and run under a franchise, while an independent hotel may still belong to a larger ownership group or be run by a third-party management company. What makes it independent is that no brand’s standards, reservation system or loyalty programme applies.

That trade-off shapes everything commercial. Independents keep full control of design, service and pricing and avoid franchise and loyalty fees, but give up a brand’s reservation channels and loyalty members — so they typically depend more on OTAs and must build direct demand themselves. Many join marketing consortia such as Preferred Hotels & Resorts or Small Luxury Hotels of the World to gain reach while keeping their own name; others join a chain’s soft brand, which brings the chain’s systems at the cost of becoming brand-affiliated.

The same applies to technology. Without a brand-mandated stack, an independent hotel chooses its own PMS and tools, and has to make them work together.

Independent hotels carry operational work a brand would otherwise share. Venli gives lean teams AI agents on top of the systems they already chose.

Frequently asked questions

What is an independent hotel?

An independent hotel operates without a hotel brand: it is not part of a chain and does not carry a brand name under a franchise or management agreement. It sets its own standards, identity and pricing, and chooses its own technology and distribution rather than using a brand’s.

Are Best Western hotels independently owned?

Yes. Best Western hotels are independently owned and operated, with owners joining Best Western as members. They are still branded hotels, though — they carry the Best Western name, standards and reservation system — so in industry data they count as brand-affiliated rather than independent.

Are Marriott hotels independently owned?

Most are owned by third parties rather than by Marriott itself: the company largely franchises its brands or manages hotels on behalf of their owners. Those hotels are still branded, however. Independent ownership and being an independent hotel are different things — the second means operating without any brand at all.
