Central Reservation System

CRS

A central reservation system (CRS) is the platform that holds a hotel or group’s rates, inventory and reservations centrally, and serves them out to every booking channel from one place.

For a single independent property the CRS and the PMS often overlap heavily. The distinction becomes meaningful at group level, where one CRS holds rate and availability logic across many properties and feeds brand.com, the GDS, OTAs and the call centre with consistent data.

The CRS is generally the commercial source of truth — what is for sale, at what price, under what conditions — while the PMS is the operational one, handling what is actually happening inside each property: who is in-house, what is charged, which rooms are clean.

Because it sits upstream of distribution, a CRS misconfiguration propagates everywhere at once. That makes it both the highest-leverage place to make a rate change and the most expensive place to make a mistake.
